ATHENA is the Advanced Thematic Network in European Women’s Studies,
which brings together 121 institutes from 27 countries in
the interdisciplinary field of Women’s Studies and
gender research. It was established in 1996 following the
European
Subject Area Evaluation of Women’s Studies (SIGMA)
in 1995. ATHENA was selected as a Thematic Network in 1998.
In
October 2003 it started a new cycle of three years full of
activities and meetings, called ATHENA2.
The Athena coordination is in the hands of Utrecht University,
more specifically with the International Office of Women’s
Studies, which is directed by prof. Rosi Braidotti.
The main areas of activities of ATHENA are:
• Working from a core curriculum to a core European
degree.
• Creating synergy between education and research, including
the development of joint PhD training at European level.
• Cooperation with women’s libraries and equal
opportunities units.
ATHENA hosts an active European network of students in Women’s
Studies and feminism, called AthenaStudentForum@NEXTGENDERation.
The forum concentrates on themes related to Women’s
Studies today from both students’ and graduates’
perspectives.
ATHENA has published 5 volumes on ‘The making of
European Women’s Studies’, several reports
and a teaching manual in European Women’s Studies, called
‘Thinking Differently’.
