We are concerned with the cross-disciplinary theme of citizenship
education and the development of identity in young people, specifically
the education of the professions that work with children and
young people through citizenship, social and economic education,
preparing them for contemporary European society. We have a
strong emphasis on citizenship for social inclusion and justice,
and in countering racism and xenophobia.
We have published: Guidelines on practice (9 so
far), Conference Proceedings (6 to date, over 300
papers), and a series of edited texts with a commercial publisher
(6 so far), and are developing an electronic textbook for
students and staff.
Our plans for 2005 – 2008 include
• working with other Networks to promote generic citizenship-related
Tuning competences (appreciation of multiculturality; understanding
cultures and customs of others)
• Citizenship Education and Research
• Citizenship Education and Society
• Global Perspectives on Citizenship education
We work to enhance the dialogue on the practice of citizenship
education and social learning in the European context and
the skills, attitudes and knowledge that teachers and other
professionals in these areas need.
We have strong links with the development of an e-learning
joint European Masters programme in Citizenship Education.
